Overview
Get My Ancestors is a stand-alone program that will allow the user to download linked pedigrees from FamilySearch, family tree (aka, new FamilySearch) in a .paf format. Download either a pedigree that starts with you or the pedigree of an ancestor. You indicate the ancestor by entering their personal identifier from FamilySearch family tree. You must be able to register for FamilySearch family tree to successfully use Get My Ancestors. The individual information downloaded is the summary information of basic events: birth christening, death, burial and marriage but not ordinances.
Window Arrangement
The program's only screen contains the following:
- Help button – Click to get this online lesson
- Button – Go to www.ohanasoftware.com
- Options which include:
- Download from FamilySearch family tree
- Me and my ancestors – Default – Downloads you and your ancestors and/or descendants according to your specifications.
- FamilySearch family tree person id with example – Enter the FamilySearch family tree Personal Identifier of the person you want to download
- Number of generations to download
- Ancestor – Default is set at 4 generations but you can change to a higher or lower number.
- Descendants – Default is set at 0 (zero) generations but you can change to the desired number.
- Include
- Children – Default has this checked
- Children Spouses – Default has this checked
- Grand Children – Default is not checked
- Grand Children Spouses – Default is not checked
- Start and Stop buttons
- Progress tracking showing:
- Downloading ancestor generation...
- Downloading descendant generation...
- Individuals downloaded...
- Lower left corner - Version number
- Lower right corner - Save As and Exit button
Quick Guide
The program is very simple to use.- Open Get My Ancestors from your desktop icon.
- Under the heading, "Download from FamilySearch family tree", select either:
- Me and my ancestors – Default
- FamilySearch family tree person id - Enter the Personal id of someone in FamilySearch family tree who is deceased. There is even an example of how you should enter the Person Identifier.
- Under the heading, "Number of Generations to download" you may select the number of:
- Ancestors – Default set to 4 – Use the up or down hours to select the desired number of generations
- Descendants – Default set to 0 (zero) – Use the up or down hours to select the desired number of generations
Remember, you will not see vital information on living people, other than yourself, your spouse and children under 18 who live with you and people, or living peopleyou have manually entered into your family tree on FamilySearch famly tree. Selecting descendants works best when you download the information of an ancestor by entering their Person Identifier. - Under the heading, "Include" place a check in the box by Children, Children Spouses, Grand Children and/or Grand Children Spouses if you want them included in the download.
- Click Start
- The FamilySearch family tree login window appears. Enter your username and password for this website. Our agreement with FamilySearch requires you to enter this information each time you logon.
- Downloading ancestor generation [number] or Done
- Downloading descendant generation [number] or Done
- Individuals downloaded [number]
- When finished, click the Save As button. It is grayed out until the download is finished.
- Name the file and click Save
- Exit – Click to close the program
